Opportunities are provided through our programs and routines that allow children to learn self-discipline and independence while being free to choose the areas of interest they will participate in throughout the day.

Our programming is based on the philosophies of the Reggio Emilia and the Emergent Curriculum approach.  These philosophies are carefully woven with our goals to prepare children for their transition into school life, and are consistent with the development of the children’s social, numeracy, language and literacy skills.

The Reggio Emilia philosophy views children as being competent, resourceful, curious, imaginative and inventive and possessing a desire to interact and communicate with others. We believe that combining this ideology with an emergent curriculum – The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) provides the best of both worlds.

Whilst Reggio Emilia is more spontaneous and exciting, the EYLF style is more structured and planned. Both are designed to motivate, stimulate and engage the children. A curriculum that is driven by the ideas, information and questions presented by the children responds to their current interests and provides planning that is based on the children’s curiosity and passions. Positive outcomes are achieved through the communication exchange between children and teachers. It is through the planned and spontaneous experiences, the routines and events that make up your child’s day, and the creative play and exploration that takes place at Sunnyside Chester Hill that encourage learning.
